My husband and I recently returned from our first trip to Maine, planned and accompanied by our son, Chris!  Now we are wondering why it took us so long to get there.  Our home away from home was the Trellis House, an award winning Bed and Breakfast in picturesque Ogunquit, Maine.

Trellis House

Nothing Marginal about this view!

From the amazing hospitality at the Trellis House to strolling Marginal Way, we fell in love with Ogunquit immediately!  So…what do you pack for a beach vacay in Maine at the first of the summer season? Since it was still a little cool in the mornings and evenings, my travel style consisted mostly of jeans, button-down shirts, and blazers.  On the flight to Boston and scenic drive to Ogunquit, I wore light blue jeans, a white button-down shirt, a tan plaid blazer, tan Converse sneakers, all complemented by a large white tote. Ready or not, Maine, here I come!!!

How Holley travels

A light raincoat is always a good idea for a late spring and early summer New England vacation.  The yellow or orange raincoats seen on our Pinterest board pair well with blue jeans, a white tee, and sneakers.  A blue checked raincoat with a striped lining is a stylish way to stay dry in late spring/early summer. Though I have to admit, when I’m on vacation, my motto is: “rain, rain go away…come again another day”.

We got lucky with the weather, sunny with the highs in the 60s and 70s…perfect for walking in town and Marginal Way (a 1 ¼ mile seaside walking path).  Anything striped from shirts, pants, scarves, to shoes is perfect for a New England vacation. Vertical striped jeans worn with an oversized sweater, wicker bag and brown Birkenstocks will give a beach boho vibe.  And I’m absolutely crazy about all the striped summer scarves on our board. Plus, a pair of striped sneakers will easily take you on a stroll through a quaint coastal town.

Bentley, the greeter

After our walks each morning, we were greeted by Bentley, the B&B owner’s adorable Labradoodle and treated to an amazing brunch. So…what to wear to a lovely seaside brunch? White jeans, a button-down shirt, and sneakers were my go to style, and when needed, I added a blazer….great for brunch and sightseeing.  A few crisp styles on our board show white jeans paired with a white t-shirt, scarf, denim jacket and sneakers. Perfect for whale watching in Kennebunkport and a lighthouse sighting in Cape Neddick.

Trellis brunch al fresco

Since New England weather can be unpredictable, layering is always a good idea.  So, be sure to pack a jacket….you will be so glad you did. A fun vacation look on our Pinterest board shows a denim jacket with a striped maxi dress and sandals….so coastal cute!  Want to look ultra-seaside chic?  A trench coat worn over a striped sweater and jeans is another great layered look for a cool beach climate.  Another classic Pinterest style shows a tan utility jacket worn with a tan striped tee, white jeans, and two-tone Chanel espadrilles.  Bring on the lobsters!!!

A floral or printed skirt, white tee or button-down, and denim jacket is a casual beach look….just add sandals or espadrilles.  This was my go-to style for happy hour at the Trellis House, dining in town, and seeing the Broadway revival of Smokey Joe’s Café at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

A chic seaside look on our Pinterest board shows a chunky sweater paired with a printed midi skirt, espadrilles, and a striped wicker tote. Even on a beach vacation, it’s fun to dress up a little….right?

Laurence, Glen and Bentley

I want to take a moment to thank Laurence and Glen, the owners of the Trellis House, for their amazing hospitality!  Now we understand why Trip Advisor ranked Trellis House as one of the top twenty-five B&Bs in the country! And Maine, you made a believer out of us….we will definitely be coming back!
