What Would Holley Wear: Six Ways To Accessorize With Animal Print

The thing we love about animal print….it is considered a neutral, and it’s a year-round staple.  That being said…we are sharing six fun ways to incorporate animal print accessories into your summer style.

One way to give your summer look a fun vibe is with animal print hair accessories.  A row of 2 or 3 hair clips is so on-trend! Headbands are all the rage and perfect for poolside lounging or a lovely summer luncheon.  I’m smitten with a cheetah-print headband from Anthropology. And ASOS offers a beautiful selection of head scarves…perfect for long ponytails and short bobs.

It’s an “urban jungle” out there!  So for comfy city walking, a pair of Calico sneakers from Amazon Fashion will get you to and from work in style.  You can go all-out animal print with a pair of Tory Burch Miller leopard or snake print sandals….so cute paired with one of your neutral outfits.  And I love how Sam Edelman adds just a touch of leopard to a pair of black and brown sandals.

When it comes to summer jewelry, anything tortoise is the way to go.  My favs are tortoise earrings paired with a neutral outfit. Double loops from Tuckernuck’s summer collection are ideal for any summer soiree’. Anthropologie’s contrasting stone bracelet is perfect for summer and will easily transition into fall. How awesome is that?

One of my favorite accessories is a belt.  A recent online purchase I made from Forever 21 was a leopard print belt with a square wicker buckle.  I love wearing it with a black linen midi skirt and peasant top. Loeffler Randall’s scalloped edge belt in leopard will definitely take your preppy style for a walk on the wild side.  And be sure to look at all the belt options from Amazon Fashion on our Pinterest board.

A hat or cap is a necessity in the summer time.  Don’t you agree? If your fitness jam is walking outdoors, Amazon Fashion’s pink leopard print baseball cap is perfect for an early morning walk or a bad hair day.  And their seagrass hat tied with an animal print scarf gives an ultra-cool vibe. Need to stay in the shade? Loeffler Randall shares a trendy option with their bucket hat in leopard.  Keepn’ it cool!

Speaking of staying in the shade, what’s cooler than a pair of animal print sun-shades?  I’m pretty sure the answer is…nothing! We are loving Anthropologie’s awesome selection…everything from rounded to cat-eye rims.  J Crew keeps things fab with their selection of tortoise eyewear….perfect for the urban jungle!

It looks like we just “let the cat out of the bag”!  From hair accessories to sunshades….your summer never looked so cool.

What Would Holley Wear: Home Town Style

Speckled Rooster Antique Shop

John and I recently made a trip back home to Arkansas, and Chris flew in from New York for a visit with his 89 year old grandparents.  He surprised his grandfather with a professionally produced cd called Knockn’ on 90! The lyrics were written by my dad, Jim Jenkins.

On our way home we stopped at Strawn’s Eat Shop in Shreveport for lunch, famous for their strawberry pie. So what would Holley wear on a road trip? Something comfy…of course! My travel style consisted of jeans worn with an old Gap t-shirt and topped with an Asian inspired kimono from F21, a cross-body bag, and a pair of Tory Burch gold sandals.  Be sure to check out some of my Pinterest favorites featuring floral kimonos paired with jeans and a tee shirt…great for traveling.

Our hometown is Smackover, Arkansas.  That’s where the romance began when John was a senior and I was a junior at Smackover High!  How adorable is that? For a short weekend hometown visit, why not treat yourself to a cute pair of pajamas.  I love how Anthropologie calls their PJs “sleep pants”. Bloomingdale’s has a great selection of Kate Spade sleepwear.   And I have to admit, I’m smitten with her pajama set and matching robe called “things we love”….just like my hometown!

The Willow Florist

Downtown Smackover has some wonderful shops that are owned and operated by women.  When I need a plant or flowers to send my mom, the Willow Florist is my go-to. The owners, Barbara Smith and Stacy Aycock, are a great mother and daughter team.  From a simple flower arrangement to an extravagant wedding, these ladies know how to add flair to any event!

A high school friend, Rhanda Ray Wright, and her business partner, Lisa Lindsey, opened The Speckled Rooster Antique Shop and The Hen’s Nest just a year ago.  Not only do they have beautiful antique furniture but also an amazing array of locally made gift items, from goat’s milk soap to Smackover-made BBQ sauce.  And a bonus…The Hen’s Nest, serves homemade lunches prepared by church ladies that benefit local missions.

The Speckled Rooster – Rhanda Ray Wright, and her business partner, Lisa Lindsey.

So, what do you wear when you’re doing a little flower market shopping or antiquing?  For a hot summer day, my suggestion is a cool/comfy bohemian inspired maxi dress or skirt….also great for a class reunion.  Dillard’s offers a wonderful selection of maxi dresses in both women’s and plus-size. With a maxi, you have the option of dressing it up a bit with low heels, or go casual with a pair of sandals.  Check out my Pinterest board for all the options.

Mrs. Gussie Gray and her sister Bernice (Bea) Kinard

A lovely boutique that has been a Smackover establishment for 50 years is The Classic Dress Shop.  So of course, I just had to stop by! The owner, Mrs. Gussie Gray, is 92 years old, and she and her sister, Bernice (Bea) Kinard, still manage the Classic!  With their “classic” taste and style….not a single thing is slowing these two down!

All that being said…there’s nothing like going home!  And now my parents are “Knock’n on 90”….how did that happen?

What Would Holley Wear: Mountain Vacation Family Style

John and I have been going to Aspen almost every summer for over two decades.  But this year was the best! That’s because our oldest son, Andy, and his family joined us!

So let’s get started and talk about what to pack for a summer mountain vacation….family style!  Since it was a very cool end of May, blazers, jackets, and even a puffer were first on my packing list.  For the flight, a comfy and practical look is a pair of jeans, button-down shirt, espadrille loafers, and a blazer.  Since it was snowing in Aspen when we arrived, I was so happy I packed a waterproof jacket. Plus, this was a great look for strolling around town and perfect for the cool summer climate.

For a fun day of hiking and exploring the John Denver Sanctuary and the Maroon Bells, a good pair of sneakers or hiking boot is a must.  REI in Waterside has a great selection to choose from. In fact, they have everything you need for hiking…so be sure to check out the photos I took at their store on our Pinterest board.  For an early morning hike on the Rio Grande Trail, I packed workout pants, a long sleeved t-shirt and a puffer jacket. Again, REI is the place to go for great service, knowledgeable sales reps, and an awesome inventory!

From shorts and jeans to sneakers and sandals, your mountain vacation style should be casual and comfortable.   And be sure to pack a pair of Birkenstocks! An easy everyday look features a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans worn with an army green button-down shirt and sandals….perfect for mountain shenanigans!  For the young gals, a hat and bandana complement a pair of cutoffs and a t-shirt….just add sandals or summer booties!

While we were in Aspen, Andy and Melissa celebrated their 7 year wedding anniversary!  For an anniversary night on the town, I’m loving a gray maxi dress topped with a denim jacket and paired with brown sandals. Another cute mountain-mama look is a striped dress topped with a green vest….just add sandals or sneakers. So cheers to Andy & Melissa and fabulous mountain style!

At the end of a fun-filled week, we were sad to say goodbye to our kiddos and Aspen.  But here’s the good news…we are still on a “rocky mountain” high!

What Would Holley Wear: Three Ways to Achieve the Ladylike Look

According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, the definition of “ladylike” is:  Graceful, polite, and behaving in a way that is thought to be socially acceptable for a woman.  Three ways to achieve this look is with dresses, bows, and lace….oh my!

For a summer party, you can’t miss with a “ladylike” look.  A floral midi dress adorned with a wicker bag is ideal for a summer brunch.  If you have a summer wedding coming up, a floral tiered dress or skirt would be ideal. And the bonus….these beauties will definitely entice you to take a few twirls on the dance floor.

Sometimes I worry the “church dress” is becoming a thing of the past.  You too? For me, the ultimate church style is a dress or skirt draped with a jacket or coat….and of course, adorned with a pretty purse.  If you are like me and need to stretch your dollars, you can achieve this look with a sundress draped with a blue or white denim jacket. This will give your church style a casual vibe while remaining ladylike!

Speaking of the “church dress”, several years ago I wrote a church lady’s fashion gospel called “When Bad Clothes Happen to Good Christians”. Eventually, I gave it a designer-ish title and now call it “BCGC” (Bad Clothes/Good Christians). Like the New Testament, there are 27 chapter titles filled with humor and salvation- saving fashion tips!

I’m pretty sure the closest earthly accessory that compares to the stars you will receive in your heavenly crown is a Texas-size bow.  Show me a blouse, dress, or accessory enhanced with a beautiful bow, and I’ll show you a glimpse of heaven! We love how a blue off-the-shoulder blouse has been blessed with a saintly bow. And speaking of blessings….we think the “Bessie Bow Tote” by Loeffler Randall deserves an “Amen”!

“Pretty is as pretty does”….did your mother ever share this confusing advice with you?  Mine did…a lot! A pretty look I love is a lace dress. Just like a bright sunny day, you will shine in a lovely yellow lace dress.  We are also crushing on an array of eyelet and dotted Swiss tops paired with denim. From Zara’s dotted Swiss top shown on our Pinterest board with cargo pants to lace and eyelet worn with jeans….ladylike never looked so cool.

So here’s the blessing….from church dresses to pretty bows and lace, without fail, a “ladylike” look will have you behaving in a way that’s not only socially acceptable….but also salvation saving!

What Would Holley Wear: Style has no Size

We all come in different shapes and sizes…right?  So this week, I’m highlighting fashion on the curvy side.  And here’s the good news….style has no size!

A great look for every size is a maxi skirt or dress.  Looking for something to wear to a summer wedding? We are loving a pink floral wrap dress from Nordstrom’s.  Another Nordstrom dress that’s perfect for a summer wedding is a floaty floral chiffon with an empire waist. We think both dresses are the perfect toast to the bride and groom!

Maxi skirts are perfect for daytime as well….no special occasion needed for this stylish look.  A few Pinterest board looks I adore show a maxi skirt paired with a denim shirt, either tucked or tied at the waist.  BTW…tying a shirt at the waist is my signature look and flattering on every body type!

A denim jacket worn with a skirt or dress is ideal for summer layering.  A floral front-button maxi skirt worn with a gray t-shirt and topped with a light blue denim jacket will take you anywhere.  And show me a ruffled maxi skirt, white t-shirt, and a denim jacket, and I’ll show you an adorable summer trio!

Not convinced you can wear the exact same outfit your skinny bestie wears? Then be sure to take a look at some side-by-side photos of blogger Katie Shurino’s celebrity copies.  She started blogging in 2015 after she realized there was very little online fashion inspiration for curvier women.

My favorites are her Meagan Markle copies….she calls them “royal shake-ups”. She looks just as royal as Meagan in a navy shift dress topped with a white coat and beret.  And a bright yellow dress looks ultra-classy on both of them. Katie’s motto is: “It’s not about who wore it better, but all about….anyone can wear anything”!

Two Peas in Prada” bloggers, Ashley and Emily, have been best friends since high school.  Even though they live in separate cities, wear different sizes, and have different styles….their passion for fashion is their bond.  I love how they each style their jeans. Emily wears a gray t-shirt topped with an army green jacket. Ashley wears her distressed denim with a white blouse and black blazer…a dynamic duo for sure!

Isn’t it exciting when major retailers finally get the big picture….joining the curvy band wagon?  March 2019, Anthropologie announced their plus-size launch! And Walmart recently introduced their Sofia Vergara line of denim. The “Stylish-Sassy-Classy” blogger gives them a test run and says they will definitely make you feel confident in your curves. Alexa Webb shares “Seven Plus Size Launches to Know” here.

I don’t know about you, but looking stylish and fabulous in any size makes me so happy!

What Would Holley Wear: In Neutral

Sometimes I like to take a “neutral” position when it comes to fashion. From tans to khakis….neutral hues are the perfect in-between seasonal look and transition so well into summertime!

Interested in creating the ultimate spring/summer capsule wardrobe?  Then neutral is the way to go. Start with a tan blazer, add white pants or jeans, and top off with an on-trend wicker or wooden bag.  Hmmm….looks like you have an ultra-chic look! Wearing neutral hues will also give your style an expensive look. So think about draping a camel blazer over a white t-shirt and white crops.

Mixing textures like crochet, fringe, linen, raffia, and straw always keep things interesting and also gives a chic vibe. Speaking of chic, Cult Gaia offers a variety of wooden and beaded handbags. Their Coco wooden tote is one of my new favs! And their beaded bags lined in linen are summertime perfection!

I had a sneaky little feeling last summer that rattan would be making a fierce comeback.  So I purchased a pair of St. Agni rattan slides trimmed in black. My intuition was correct, and now I’m seriously eyeing a few of the rattan totes on our Pinterest board.  In the late 60s, my mom and grandmother taught me how to crochet! So when I saw Oscar de la Renta’s 2019 crochet collection strut down the runway…it was a walk down memory lane for me!  BTW….who can still crochet a granny square?

Shoes are another way to incorporate neutral colors into a sophisticated wardrobe.  We think a pair of Tory Burch color block espadrilles are ideal for hanging out on Joe T’s patio.  Also, Loeffle Randall’s woven leather mules are so chic. Looking for a steal? Amazon Fashion has an amazing copy of Golden Goose sneakers with a major savings…..$36 vs. $300!

Show me a pair of paper bag or belted pants, and I’ll show you a super cool and relaxed summer-look.  A Pinterest look I adore pairs a tan short-sleeve shirt with crops, a long belt, and a wicker bag. Another idea is to wear a scarf as a belt with your paper bag pants…all great looks for your everyday neutral style!

Looking for a summer style that will take you from church to happy hour?  A khaki skirt is the answer! A stylish church-look on our board features a khaki skirt with a short-sleeve ruffled black top and a pair of heels.  And it’s so easy to style it casually with a pair of slides or sandals. For happy hour, wear your tan skirt with an off the shoulder top! Don’t you just love how making just a few changes can give you so many options?

So what position is your style taking this summer?  From casual to luxe, a neutral look will definitely give you a luxe feel!

What Would Holley Wear: Style Has No Age

First, a quote from a client’s 20 year old daughter:  “Mom…just because you can wear something, doesn’t mean you should.”  So here’s the deal…you can basically wear anything, but the trick is to style your outfit to complement you, your age, and your lifestyle!

Sometimes with age, we get wiser…right?  And with shoes, the great news is we don’t have to wear high heels to look or feel young anymore.  Show me a pair of kitten or block heels, and I’ll show you ageless style! For an on-trend look, wear them with your jeans. Flats, espadrilles, and sneakers go with everything from jeans to dresses. Perfect for your lifestyle….right?

If you don’t own a pair of cropped jeans or pants….you need to.  They are a great replacement for capris and will definitely up your style game.  We love how German lifestyle blogger, Bibi Horst, shares her impeccable taste, wearing white cropped pants with an animal print blouse.  Nothing is stopping this fashion trailblazer!

And because I adore Bibi’s style so much, I just have to share a few more of her fabulous looks.  For example, I love how she styles a simple white blouse and jeans ensemble with a spring floral bomber jacket and strappy flats.  And she looks so put together wearing a yellow sweater and white blouse with camel slacks….styled to perfection!

Wide leg pants and crops are another way to keep current with fashion. Plus, they make for a comfy outfit when you are hanging out with your grandchildren.  To dress up a pair of white crops, add block heels and a wicker bag. For a case of less is more, think about styling a white blouse with white pants….ultra-classy!

Show me one of today’s “it” bags, and I’ll show you a way to impress your daughter!  From Staud’s translucent bags to their bucket bags…get ready to make a statement! Danse Lente and Boyy’s contemporary bags stole the show at New York Fashion Week.  Trust me on this one….add these names to your fashion vocabulary, and next thing you know, you’ll be on your daughter’s cool register!

Print Mixing definitely proves that style has no age.   To accomplish this ageless look, think about pairing a printed skirt with a leopard print sweater tied around your waist.  My Pinterest board fav features a printed skirt paired with a leopard print clutch and sandals. How fun and ageless does that sound?   And I have to admit, I’m going gaga over how a mother and daughter style a head to toe mix of print and color….a dynamic duo for sure!

So point proven….style really doesn’t have an age!  Though it is up to you to move fashion forward. And if you need a little help…just message me!

What Would Holley Wear: Styling your Spring Denim

We think spring and denim go hand in hand!  From dark denim to light blues and whites….styling your spring denim never looked so fresh!

What’s more refreshing than a little spring cleaning?  Nothing…right? It’s that time of year to start cleaning out your closet and packing away your winter clothes.  Instead of coats, substitute with blazers, wraps, and scarves. Springtime is the perfect time of year to drape a long gauzy scarf over a t-shirt and jeans.

It’s also time to transition to light-weight blazers.  A navy blazer paired with white cropped jeans, wicker bag, and striped mules will take you from running errands around town to a fabulous resort vacation.  Another fresh look is a checked blazer and white t-shirt paired with light blue denim. So cute for a Saturday brunch or a trip to your local farmer’s market!  Can’t beat these double-duty looks!

Needing a refresher course?  Keep wearing your dark and black denim because it works year round.  Wearing a white tucked-in shirt with dark jeans will add a crispness to your spring style…just add a scarf for a pop of color!   Plus, we think a long white shirt or tunic looks especially sharp with dark denim. A stylist tip….a white blazer matched with black jeans never fails to give a classy look.

A new trend is wearing a wrap or button-down dress over your jeans.  We think an Asian inspired floral wrap dress worn over a cami with jeans is perfect for any age.  A fashion blogger on our Pinterest board inspires us; wearing a white midi length dress over dark- wash skinny jeans with black patent heels.  To give it a casual vibe, I suggest pairing it with black espadrilles.

A kimono worn with jeans is another light and breezy springtime look.  Point proven with Anthropologie’s blue and white printed boho-chic duster.  We love the flowy statement sleeves, and of course, it looks awesome with jeans and a tee.  If you like a shorter version, Anthro’s floral kimono in yellow has your name written all over it.

A denim jacket draped over a dress makes for an adorable spring ensemble. To dress it up a bit, pair it with a midi skirt and a bejeweled handbag. And for now, think about wearing a blue jean jacket with a strapless maxi dress. In the heat of the summer, it will look chic draped over your shoulders. Check out all these style tips on our Pinterest board.

Isn’t it refreshing to know you have so many options when it comes to styling your spring denim?  Wow….spring cleaning never looked so stylish!

What Would Holley Wear: Italian Vacation

When my friend, Jacqui, asked me to write an article about what to wear on an Italian vacation…I was all in. Six couples are traveling by private bus over a 12-day period to Como, Siena, Sorrento, Capri, Positano, and the Amalfi coast.  Their one and only rule…no museums and no churches! Don’t you wish you were going, too?

So, of course, comfy clothes and shoes for the plane are a must. Athleta has fabulous travel pants that are super comfortable and don’t wrinkle.  Since planes can be chilly, wear them with a t-shirt and a long sleeve cardigan or a light weight jacket.  Jacqui chose a soft trench from Banana Republic Factory. Be sure to take a look at more jacket options from LL Bean and Tuckernuck on our Pinterest board.

Their first three days will be spent in Como.  My advice is to make it simple and dress once for day and evening.  A pair of jeans, t-shirt, blazer and flats will do the trick. A cross-body or belt-bag is the safe way to go.  One of my favorites is a flat Hammitt cross body bag which can easily be worn under a jacket. And of course, we are sharing more bag options on our Pinterest board!

Striped pants and jeans are another versatile travel look.  Just add a shirt tied at the waist or a tee. For daytime add a denim jacket, and in the evenings, a comfy wrap from J McLaughlin.  Also think about wearing the pair of white sneakers you wore on the plane. To take your style up a tourist notch or two, add a neck scarf and a small straw clutch.

For their next excursion, our jetsetters will be traveling to Siena for four days of wine touring.  Dancing, dining, and diversions…oh my! This is where I suggest wearing a midi or maxi skirt with flats, slides, or sneakers.  It’s so easy to create multiple looks with a skirt. Repurpose one of the shirts you wore with your pants or jeans, and drape a denim jacket or blazer over your shoulders.  To add extra style, tie a knot at the hem on one side of your maxi skirt! Trust me on this one…no one will mistake you for an American tourist!

After a day trip to the Amalfi Coast, the travelers will spend the remainder of their trip in Sorrento at a hillside hotel with views of the sea.  The best way to pack for a long vacation is with a capsule wardrobe. My thought is to go with black and white or navy and white, and add a pop of color with your accessories.    Talbot’s black and white spring collection definitely adds a sophisticated flair to a capsule resort style. And for a fun daytime look, mix it up with checks and polka-dots. Add color with a pair of loafers or flats….I’m thinking red, or yellow, maybe green, or orange….you get the picture!

Hopefully, Jacqui’s trip will inspire you to start planning your next European vacay.  And be sure to message me if you need help organizing a capsule travel wardrobe!

What Would Holley Wear: A Blazer and a Handbag

If you ask me what my go-to style is….it’s definitely a bag and a blazer.  I typically wear a blazer with jeans, and a handbag always completes the outfit!

Let’s start first with complementing a pair of jeans with a bag and a blazer. Last summer, a blue plaid blazer, white jeans, and a wooden bag was my vacation go-to style…from sea to shining sea! Two new favorites I purchased on sale at H&M are a striped black blazer and a double-breasted striped navy blazer with gold buttons.  And both pair perfectly with my Japanese inspired wooden bag. Ready or not spring and summer….here I come!

When it comes to staying cool and comfortable, linen is the way to go.  A white or linen blazer coordinated with dark denim crops pairs perfectly with a round wicker bag.  A few cool summer looks on our Pinterest board feature a pink blazer. My spring/summer go-to bag is a white bucket bag incased with macramé and I’m loving it in pink as well!

Now let’s talk about the ideal Easter Sunday look….a dress or skirt worn with a blazer!  The Suburban Faux Pas blog shows a tweed blazer, silk bow blouse, and light pink skirt accented with a white Louis Vuitton shoulder bag. Another beautiful Easter look is a floral dress complemented with a white tuxedo blazer and a Chloe bag. And both looks are ideal for an Easter Sunday brunch!

Meagan Markle always shines wearing approachable styles.  She looks stunning in a striped Altuzarra dress matched with a black blazer. A black and white shoulder bag completes her ensemble.  Plus we love how her striped bag does double-duty when she wears it with a white blazer and pant ensemble.

Who doesn’t want to look chic?   The ultimate in sophistication is a black double-breasted blazer worn with white jeans or crops.  Give it a casual vibe with sandals and add a black wooden bag. Or dress it up with a metallic handbag.  Either way, the chicness is over the top classy!

Planning a European vacation?    A leopard print maxi dress topped with a black blazer paired with a wicker tote is perfect for strolling cobble streets in the evening. Another sophisticated vacation look shows a black and white woven bag with a tan blazer and white crops. We are also crushing on St. Agni’s collection of rattan handbags!  And for alfresco dining, a Danse Lente white shoulder bag is the perfect match for a pink plaid blazer worn over a black lace cami….so French! Check these styles out on our Pinterest board.

Now I’m starting to wonder if a “bag and a blazer” are your go-to style as well.  Hmmm…seems like great minds think alike!
