School of Gracious Living – October Schedule of Virtual Classes

“True hospitality is welcoming the stranger on her own terms. This kind of hospitality can only be offered by those who have found the center of their lives in their own hearts.” Henri Nouwen

If you are new to Home with a Twist, welcome! I launched my School of Gracious Living in May as my perfect solution to virtually connect with women during the pandemic while sharing my love of entertaining and hospitality.  I welcome you into my home through a virtual experience without you having to leave yours! People make the party, not the space. I thoughtfully prepare a curriculum of classes covering a variety of topics. I look forward to hosting each of your virtual learning experiences. The full class offerings and registration are available here.

Each class includes 90-minutes of cooking tips, instruction, and hands-on cooking. After you register you will receive an instructional email with the recipe to orient you to the classroom experience. At the end of our time together you will have created something spectacular. Ask a friend to join you, or host a group of your girlfriends. Since we meet virtually you can connect with your friend from around the world.

Saturday, August 15 – 10 a.m. – Melissa’s Mouthwatering Biscuits. My biscuit recipe is legendary! In fact, it won a biscuit challenge against Joanna Gaines’s recipe for biscuits back in June 2018. Saturday, August 22 – 10 a.m. Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies. I have perfected hands-down the best recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies using a few secret steps. If you love warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies then you will not want to miss this hands-on class. The question I will ask at the end of the class — will you share or keep them all for yourself? Register here.

Saturday, August 29 – 10 a.m. Let’s Make a Birthday Cake!  My birthday is coming up in August and as Julia Child once said, “A party without a cake, is just a meeting!” I want as many people to be in on the fun as possible, so I am offering a special class price of $5.60 in honor of my 56th birthday! Treat a girlfriend to take the class with you!  Join me for a fun morning hands-on virtual cooking class as I teach you how to make a classic birthday yellow cake with rich chocolate buttercream frosting. School of Gracious Living – Let’s Meet for Cocktails

Let’s have cocktails!  I am excited to partner with Sledge Distillery for a fun cocktail class.

Sledge Distillery is a local family-owned business in Tolar, Texas.  Mark’s father, John Walter (Dub) Sledge, grew up in Hood County on Fall Creek. He was the second oldest boy in a family of eleven. When the uncles got together on the creek, Dub would help make moonshine.

Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Dub and his uncle were drafted and he was sent to Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. It wasn’t long before Dub put his learnin’ to good use. He accumulated materials to make a still and used mess hall scraps and fresh fruit to concoct high demand shine allowing him to sell or trade for anything they needed.

When Dub returned from war, he married Kathryn Massey who didn’t put up with drinking, dancing, or smoking. She agreed to marry him but his ways had to change and making moonshine would be at the top of the list!  He agreed, they married and raised three children who didn’t know him as a moonshiner although the stories lingered. When Dub passed away, his son, Mark, found his WWII recipes in his war chest, bought a still, and set out to recreate the family legacy which you experience now through our products.

We will start our happy hour learning to craft a Texas Sunset cocktail using Sledge’s famous whiskey, and hear how they craft and create their recipes. While we are sipping cocktails, I will teach you how to make Chipotle and Rosemary Roasted Nuts perfect for happy hours and gift-giving. Invite your favorite friend to join you!

If you’d like to be a part of the fun, please visit my store here and register. Space is limited and the registration deadline is July 21.  Don’t like whiskey? You can substitute the cocktail with vodka.  And, if you’d rather sip a mocktail, have a fun evening, and make my mixed-nuts recipe, then you can sign up, too. We’d love to have you.

Let’s gather, learn, and create!

Let’s Gather for a Virtual Open House!

I hope you’ve read my big announcement this week that I am teaching virtual home and garden classes – Mrs. Twist’s School of Gracious Living. I have been thinking for a long time how I can share all the things my mother taught me with other women, somehow making a difference. I love to see a woman’s face light up when they learn something new. You can see a radiance of self-confidence.  That is what I am hoping to see with my passion project.  Here’s a brief video introduction, with a peek at my home office…

Join me for a virtual sneak peek of my Gracious Living project – all schools must have an Open House – on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. CST.  We will gather in my kitchen and connect without limitations.  I will gladly welcome you into my home, while you stay safe in your space.  Mostly, I want to hear what YOU want to learn?  I will have my pen and notebook handy to write down all your ideas. You might see a cat or two, in the background, too.

Ready to register?  Visit my Gracious Living store here.  The Open House is the first class listed. While you are there, take a look at the class schedule to see what’s planned.  The Open House is complimentary.  I promise if you spend a little time with me, you will like me!

Mrs. Twist’s School of Gracious Living Register Now

I am so very happy to announce my new passion project – Mrs. Twist’s School of Gracious Living. It’s been on my heart for over a year to share the talents my mother passed on to me, but I wasn’t quite sure how. I know I have my blog and podcast as platforms, but I thrive connecting with people on a more personal level. I contemplated renting a retail space or teaching in other people’s spaces, and then COVID-19 happened.

For the last eight weeks, as I’ve sheltered in my home, I realized how much I love being and living in my home. My home fills my heart with joy and re-energizes me. Yet, I still want to connect with women.  We are all having to rethink our futures, turn those images on a slightly different axis, and create unique ways to stay connected. I’m inspired to curate an opportunity for women to gather and learn from each other.  This is my perfect solution – welcome women into my home through a virtual experience without you having to leave yours! People make the party, not the space.

Entertaining is in my DNA. Mother loved to celebrate life’s occasions – big and small. I grew up watching mother host all kinds of gatherings. I bet I attended my first cocktail party at the age of five! But most of all, Mother loved her home.  I think that’s why my home is so important to me. Many special moments happen at home. I founded Home with a Twist in memory of my mother to celebrate her life and the gifts she shared with me. It’s a daughter’s twist on her mother’s traditions.

With over twenty years of professional event planning experience, and running a household, I’d say I’m an expert in the hospitality business.  I’ve produced events big and small. Nothing makes me happier than teaching and encouraging women to discover their hidden talents. I’ve been featured on Good Morning Texas and in several home and garden magazines. Here on Home with a Twist I offer inspiration on food, home, decorating, and entertaining. I lead a popular monthly Book Club “Mrs. Twist Reads This” with a membership of over one-hundred women nationwide, and produce “The Hemline” podcast. Now with “Mrs. Twist’s School of Gracious Living,” I have thoughtfully prepared a curriculum of classes covering a variety of topics. I look forward to hosting each of your virtual learning experiences on Zoom.  What’s unique about Mrs. Twist’s School is that you can learn from the comfort of your home and share what we cook and learn with your family and friends. We will gather in my kitchen, living room, garden, ladies’ lounge, and dining table to inspire togetherness. The full class offerings and registration are available here.

Visit my store to see the upcoming class schedule. New classes will be added based on the seasons.  For additional information regarding policies please access this helpful guide and this list of frequently asked questions.  I’ve limited the virtual class size for more individual attention, increased participation, and better communication between me and my guests.  You may also book a private virtual class for yourself or as a gift, and I also offer private virtual classes for groups of 10. I can customize a virtual learning experience tailored just for you. Together, we will gather, learn, and create.
