My Favorite Hair and Makeup

Having more time at home I have added a few things to my hair and makeup routine I just have to share because, well, they are game-changing. And, some of these things will make great Christmas gifts.

Hair –

For several years I have been using the Revlon One-Step hairdryer. One of my besties, Mary, sold me on it.  It not only dries your hair, but it styles it as well. For me it’s a timesaver in case I don’t want to take the extra step to curl it. The secret to the outcome of your hair is sectioning it with these clips. I start at the bottom and work my way up.  I also live by this Oi Oil to smooth out my hair after I blow dry each section. I use about two drops to fight frizz, and add shine and softness to my hair. A bottle literally lasts a year.

One problem with my hair is the lack of volume on the crown of my head. The last time I got a haircut (I’ve only had two haircuts since the pandemic and my normal stylist Mandy has been on maternity leave since March), the stylist suggested using Oprah’s favorite Valoom. It’s kind of like a crimper. You section pieces of hair and starting at the roots you crimp the hair. The clamp looks like a waffle iron and it creates volume pockets. The first time I used it I wasn’t sold, but then I watched this YouTube video, practiced, and oh, my. It really does make me look like Mary Tyler Moore!

Makeup –

Pretty makeup results will only happen if you are religious in your skincare routine. I started using Savor Beauty in March and my skin has never looked better. The first time I used the products I messaged Angela, the founder, to tell her “I just moaned out loud washing my face!”  She replied back, “Best message I’ve seen all week!”

Founded by Angela Jia Kim and inspired by her mother’s Korean heritage the products are hand-made in small batches and certified organic. I literally feel like I am getting a spa treatment every morning to start the day and in the evening before bed.  Take a look at their website. I love the pumpkin and raspberry serums, the rose-oil spritz, the caviar eye cream, and coconut cleansing oil. And they send you samples with every purchase.

The other thing I can’t live without is this BlendSmart2 Makeup Brush. It’s on Oprah’s Favorite Things. It’s a battery-operated motorized brush that gives you the look of an airbrushed makeup application. It comes with three brush heads so I use one for my Laura Mercier foundation, Bobbi Brown blush, and Laura Mercier loose powder.

The eyes are the window to the soul.  Two things I cannot live without eyelashes and eyebrows. My daughter turned me onto Ardell accent lashes and the clear lash adhesive. I wore eyelash extensions for about a year but I got tired of the upkeep and expense, and when they were removed, I had almost no lashes left. What has grown out are so small, I needed a supplement so I looked like I had eyes. Second, eyebrows. As we age our eyebrows thin out and lose their pigment. Do not go to all the trouble to make up a beautiful face and leave your eyebrows naked. I love Brow Wiz by Anastasia of Beverly Hills.  Keep your peepers focused on the day with these Lapis blue gorgeous specs from Warby Parker.  I love their high quality, affordable price and that for every pair I purchase, they give a pair to someone in need.

Last, as you walk out the door (or into the next room) add a pop of the most perfect red on your lips from Bobbi Brown – Harlow Red. I swear this red looks great on everyone. I like that it’s a lip pencil that gives a nice matte finish and has great staying power.

My Mother’s Beauty Secret

Thank you to everyone who participated in my contest giveaway for a free pair of satin pillowcases from our sponsor Morning Glamour.  The challenge to win was to share your mother’s favorite beauty secret.  I loved reading all your replies and I’m excited to share them with you.

But first, let me share a few tips from my mother.  Listen to my latest podcast here where I shared that one of her secrets was the religious use of her satin pillowcases.  Next, was her love of bright lipstick.  I share a sweet story here about her favorite shade.  And last, her insistence that I always wear sunscreen.  When all my girlfriends were sunning themselves on rooftops and lakeside slathered in baby oil, she had me covered from head- to-toe in longsleeves and Pre-Sun on any skin that was showing.  She’d say every single time, “you’ll thank me someday.”  Believe me, I’ve thanked her many times as I’ve gotten older.

Here’s the fun roundup of responses…

“Always have a great hairstylist and always wear a smile.”  Mandy H.

“Wash every night with plain soap and water, pat, don’t rub dry. Oil of Olay. Stay out of the sun. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink mostly water.” Kristen D.

“Stay out of the sun and use Pond’s cold cream.❤️” Joyce H.

“My mom has great skin at 87. She swore by OJ’s Beauty Lotion for many years.”  Helen K.

“Ironically it was pink satin pillow cases and that was 50 years ago! She went to the “beauty parlor” every Thursday and the pillow cases kept her looking good in between. 💗 pink was her favorite color. Miss her very much.”  Janice M.

“My mom didn’t really have a beauty secret that I can remember. She never wore a lot of makeup but did cleanse and moisturize with Clinique products! And wore sunscreen!”  Becky H.

“Always wear lipstick!” Rebekah B.

“My mom has beautiful skin.. Avon Moisture Rich cream is all she ever used.. plus she is beautiful inside too!”  Debra W.

“My mom loved satin pillow cases, too!❤️”  Deanna B.

“Pond’s cold cream.”  Patti M.

“Pond’s cold cream was my grandma’s secret. My mother mixed egg, mayo, olive oil and honey to make a hair mask.”  Christina R.

“Oil of Olay moisturizer every morning and night.  And, Jergens lotion for hands and never leave the house without lipstick!” Lisa R.

“Scotch tape on the 11’s between her eyebrows – her ‘worry lines’.” Carol R. (this wins the award for the most unique secret!)

“Always dab moisturizer around the eyes with your ring finger.”  Kimberly B.

“Oil of Olay.”  Leigh C.

“Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.” Ali B.

“Silk, satin pillowcases.  Mother always slept with one on her baby pillow made of down feathers.  I still have her pillow.”  G. Greenblatt

Remember you can still use promo code MG25 to receive 25% off your satinpillow case order.  Thanks for sharing!  I loved each and every response.

Easy Homemade Facial Scrub for Winter

I had the best time with my childhood girlfriends last weekend.  We each take turns planning a long weekend getaway, and this year it was my turn.  I invited them to come and spend time at my home doing local experiences.  If you want to see all the fun photos from the weekend, either visit Facebook or Instagram where I posted pics and be sure to follow me so you won’t miss out on my fun!

The highlight for me was our private poolside restorative yoga session with Stephanie Mamantov (you can find her here on Facebook).  She teaches private and group lessons around Fort Worth and in her home studio in Joshua.  I met her through classes she teaches at Fitness Connection. She brought all the equipment and all we had to do was be open to the healing properties of yoga.  She concluded the session with meditation.

It was so relaxing being outside hearing the sound of the birds, the water and the crackling fireplace.  Truly a treat to start our day!

Stephanie also shared a recipe for an easy, homemade Honey, Apple Cider Vinegar and Sugar Facial Scrub for Winter:

3 TBL raw honey

1 tsp raw apple cider vinegar

2 TBL raw organic sugar

Combine ingredients and apply to clean skin.  Leave on skin for 1-2 minutes before removing with a warm, damp wash cloth.  Can be used to exfoliate skin bi-weekly.  Enjoy this decadent and economical treatment!

If you want to schedule your own retreat, private lesson or inquire about Stephanie’s yoga offerings connect with her through email at [email protected]

My Morning Routine

I am intrigued when I ask people what their morning routine is.  Mother’s was always coffee and the paper.  Daddy’s was a shower and cereal.  Some people start their day with exercise.  It’s different for everyone it seems, so I thought I’d give you a snapshot of how I start my day…

It’s hard to be mad at his face!

Feed the animals.  This includes our three cats, Wilson (named after the movie Castaway…because he was a stray), Oreo (named for the famous cookie…because, well she is black and white), and Trevor #thecatwhowearsbowties.  He’s named after Mr. Bee’s English Uncle which you can read about here.  And our sweet dog, Hazel, named after my great aunt.  It’s a production because they all have to eat separately due to the fact that Wilson and Trevor try to eat everyone else’s food including their own.

Then, I drink a glass of lemon water.  My physician turned me onto to this about a year ago.  It helps to boost your metabolism and burn calories, plus your body has been without water for eight hours and it’s needing hydration.  The more you keep your body filled with the water the less you will desire snacking and sweets.  This simple step has really helped to suppress my appetite until lunchtime eliminating the calories and need for breakfast.

After I shower, my favorite lotion to use is Philosophy Body Emulsion in Amazing Grace.  It smells so clean and fresh and it’s super moisturizing.  For an added indulgence, you can layer the scent with their body wash and perfume.  My favorite time to do this is before bed and it makes the sheets smell so good.  If I love on Trevor, Miss Bee always says,  “Trevor, you smell like Momma!”

There are a few facial products I have been loyal to for a while from Josie Maran — I cannot live without her Argan Oil.  I not only use it on my face but it’s terrific on my cuticles, the backs of my hands, my neck and anywhere else you have dryness.  You mix the oil with the powder cleanser to make a gentle exfoliant in the morning before putting on your makeup for the day.  Always be sure to add the extra protection of sunscreen on your face!

Next, my diffuser.  I have a diffuser in almost every room of my house to fill the air with cleansing, relaxing scents.  Usually in the morning I will use a mixture of Jasmine and Lime essential oils.  It makes a beautiful blend that is soft, yet invigorating and my bathroom smells like a day spa.  Whole Foods has a great selection of oils.  My personal brand favorite is Young Living essential oils. Then, I make a good cup of coffee with cream and one raw sugar and sit down to listen to a podcast on my “Hey, Google” while I apply makeup and do my hair.  You can find my starter set of Podcasts here.  I’ve found a few more that I really like and I’ll share those soon.  I choose Podcasts over TV so I can learn something new, be empowered with a positive message or just plain laugh!

After I am all ready for work, or play, I make my bed.  Here is a great article from the Power of Positivity on the “Five Reasons You Should Make Your Bed Every Morning.”

“If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. Making your bed will [reinforce] the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right.” – U.S. Navy Admiral William H. McCraven, former Navy Seal.

Want tips on the proper way to make your bed for a good night’s sleep?  Turn to whom other than Martha Stewart here.  And here is a link from my Pinterest Master Bedrooms Board for 48 Real Life Bedrooms that Wow (including that one above!).

So, that’s my routine in the morning.  What’s something you do everyday that wouldn’t be the same if you left it off your list?  I’d love to hear from you.  Make it a great day!

Let’s Ask Mrs. Twist — Nailed it!

I got this message from @hughes9463 on Instagram after I posted Holley’s story on the blog for New Year’s Eve inspiration.

“I really want a chrome polish…not Jamberry though.”

The question was in reference to the cool picture of the chrome nail polish on Holley’s Pinterest board.  This was perfect timing because I was planning to share something that’s Buzzworthy on the topic of nail polish. So, this post will not only answer @hughes9463’s question, but give you the scoop on a nail system I have started using.

This is the photo that inspired the question. Beautiful, metallic nail polish that looks like shiny chrome.  There are quite a few images on Pinterest if you search “chrome nail polish.”  The tricky part came when I clicked on the actual photo.  Either the image or webpage no longer existed or the product was no longer available.  So, I googled it and read some interesting reviews about the chrome look.  Most comments related to the fact that the shiny finish is difficult to achieve. More than one source agreed that the only way to get the polish to go on evenly and achieve the look is to apply it over a thick topcoat of previously applied clear polish.  It helps to smooth out any ridges or imperfections on the nail so the polish adheres evenly.

Most reviewers said hands-down the best polish to achieve these results was Sally Hansen Color Foil — which is no longer available, but you can find it on Amazon.  So, that was a deadend.

I did round up some other metallic options to consider.  They probably won’t give you the clear, chrome finish I think you’re wanting to achieve, but these are some of the hottest metallic colors recommended by bloggers.

Sally Hansen Game of Chromes from their Miracle Gel line
Two colors from Essie –  No Place Like Chrome and Copper Penny

All that being said, I really think the only way you are going to get the metallic look on your own (I am not a nail technician, but I bet your favorite salon could do it with a powder or gel technique), is to go the Jamberry route.

For those of you out there asking, “what is Jamberry?” — it’s a brand of polish like Essie or OPI, but they specialize in nail wraps, kinda like vinyl lettering.  They have a color appropriately named “Chrome” that would give you the spot-on look you are wanting for $15.

Next, is this new to me OPI Gel Break kit I picked up recently at Ulta.   Like alot of people, when I take a break from having gel nails, my nails are soft, they break and peel easily and for about two months I cannot get my nails to grow.  This 3-step kit is made just for gals like us whose nails need critical care to get them back to being strong and healthy.

The look is sheer, healthy color.  The 3-steps include a serum, protector and top coat with ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (a lubricant), vitamins and bamboo extract to restore your nail’s health.  You can choose the kit with the color you prefer (either properly pink, barely beige, too tan-tilizing) and purchase colors separately if you want to change up your look.

I started using the kit on Wednesday evening.  The packaging says I should see results in just a week.  So far, I like the finish and how it’s wearing on my nails.  I’ll let you know after I’ve given it enough time to see results.

Thank you Jan for your question.  If you are on Instagram, like Jan, I post fun content there you might not see on my blog, so consider yourself an insider and follow the fun @homewithatwist.  Keep the questions coming for Mrs. Twist.  She loves the challenge!

Wednesday’s Weave — My Three Favorite Beauty Products

It’s Wednesday so I’m sharing something fun — my three favorite beauty products — a Dry Shampoo, a lip/cheek stain, and a BB Cream.

My Three Favorite Beauty Products

The Fekkai Blowout Spray is a hair refresher — a nice word for dry shampoo.  For me it also adds some texture to my hair.  The best thing is that it doesn’t smell funny.  I can extend the length between hair washings which is actually better for your hair, especially if it’s color treated.

Lip and Cheek Stain by Josie Maran.  I have been using Argan Oil products for many years, in particular this brand.  They are so nourishing for your skin.  This little tube not only gives me nice rosy cheeks, but it also doubles as a lip stain.  A little goes a long way as it’s highly pigmented.  I highly recommend Josie’s Argan Oil as your moisturizer at night.  It sinks right into my skin and feels luxurious.

Last, is Dr. Jart’s BB Dis-a-Pore Beauty Balm.  I have been using this as my foundation for about three years.  It’s light, easy to apply and evens out my complexion without heaviness.  The benefits of a BB cream is that it moisturizes, protects with the SPF and conceals.  It’s mighty.

So, that’s my Wednesday.  What’s your favorite must-have in your beauty bag?

Buzzworthy: Ponds 2-Week Challenge

Ponds.  I used to see it on my Grandmother’s night stand.  I used to watch her smooth it on her face at the end of the day to remove her makeup.  Ponds has a new spokesperson to promote their line of products to make it relevant to women in 2015.  Jordana Brewster.  Aka John Ross’s/Christopher’s/Nicholas’s girlfriend from Dallas.

I read in a magazine that the Ponds towelettes were perfect for traveling so while I was shopping for them recently, I thought I’d get a tub-o-Ponds and try the 2-week Ponds Challenge.  I purchased the Anti-wrinkle formula which comes with a “wrinkle calculator.”  It gives you two applicators — one for when you start using it and the second for when your 2-weeks is up.  You press the powdered applicator along the outside of your eye where your “crows feet” “laugh lines” are.  Then you smile real big like and press the sticky applicator on, pull it off and compare your results with the reference guide.

Good news — I was on the far right with smooth skin as my start.  Bad news, I don’t think I smiled as big as I was supposed to, so I may end of up with more wrinkles after the two weeks is up.

Nevertheless, when I put the cream on at night, I am transported back to my childhood.  The smell is light and very distinctive of the Ponds I remember back in the 60s as I spent time with my Grandmother.  Maybe she’s who inspired me to be interested in taking good care of my skin.

The other coolio thing is that designer Jonathan Adler has designed new packaging perfect to leave out on your vanity.

Check back in two weeks for the low down.  You can go to Ponds and there’s a $1 off coupon and other beauty information to check out.  Give it a try yourself and let me know what you think.
*I am not being compensated for this post.  Just my own buzz.

It’s a 10 Product Review

I follow the The Small Things blog.  Kate always posts fun articles on the latest hair and beauty trends.  One of her suggestions was It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Conditioner.

This nourishing product promises 10 miracles:  Repairs dry damaged hair, adds shine, smoothes and controls frizz, seals and protects hair color, detangles, prevents split ends, stops hair breakage, creates silkiness, enhances natural body, and is a flat iron thermal protector.  It works on all hair types to bring out your hair’s natural luster and manageability while also making hair stronger and healthier with every use. Can be used on wet hair for extra shine or dry hair in place of a styling cream.

I started using it about a month ago.  I have noticed a signficant improvement in the appearance of my hair.  It’s super shiny (like my friend Mrs. Burdette.  She has crazy, shiny hair).  This product has helped me to stabilize my sanity during the snail’s pace attempt to grow out my hair.  My haircut may be scary during its transition but, darn it, my hair is shiny and soft!

Ulta has it for $18.  Don’t forget to use a coupon and you can score it for $15…only a few sprays each time and you can easily get this product to last a while to justify the cost.

Have a fab Friday.

50 Zits

I really don’t have that many, but I’m almost 50 (3 months till lift off) and my pre-menopausal skin is having it’s last hurrah with breakouts.  Like in places I normally don’t get “blemishes”  the sweet Southern term for zits.  So at my last facial, the therapist recommended a product that I think is helping clear up my skin.

I’ve blogged before on the Eminence Skincare products I use.  They are organic and full of good for you ingredients.  I am using the Clear Skin Willow Bark Booster-Serum.  It’s a brown syrup-like serum you put all over your clean skin before moisturizer.  It has willow bark, tea tree oil, walnut leaf, anise, and vitamins A, C and E and Coenzyme Q10.  The first few times I used it my skin tingled, now my skin just drinks it up.

I was having problems with breakouts along the hair line, under my bangs and along the chin.  This serum has cleared all those areas up.  The therapist made sure to tell me to use the product everyday as a preventive measure.  I purchase my products at the Spa and through my dermatologist.  Your face is the first place people see, don’t you want to make sure to take good care of it?

Seven Little Things — #7 Smelling Good

Just in time for Mother’s Day shopping (since we know the best gifts are the ones we pick out) I have two favorite fragrances I like to wear, especially in the summer months when it is so hot and humid.

Isacc Mizrahi’s Fabulous.  I love the offset bottle shape and the cute polka dot top.  The fragrance smells like peonies, lemons and is slightly musky.  Perfect for a date night.  And who doesn’t like to be fabulous!?

My second fave is Philosophy’s Pure Grace.

You truly smell just like you stepped out of the shower with that soap and water clean smell.  This lady like scent is perfect to put on right before bed so the sheets smell nice, or right after a work out.

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!
