Let’s Ask Mrs. Twist — Nailed it!

I got this message from @hughes9463 on Instagram after I posted Holley’s story on the blog for New Year’s Eve inspiration.

“I really want a chrome polish…not Jamberry though.”

The question was in reference to the cool picture of the chrome nail polish on Holley’s Pinterest board.  This was perfect timing because I was planning to share something that’s Buzzworthy on the topic of nail polish. So, this post will not only answer @hughes9463’s question, but give you the scoop on a nail system I have started using.

This is the photo that inspired the question. Beautiful, metallic nail polish that looks like shiny chrome.  There are quite a few images on Pinterest if you search “chrome nail polish.”  The tricky part came when I clicked on the actual photo.  Either the image or webpage no longer existed or the product was no longer available.  So, I googled it and read some interesting reviews about the chrome look.  Most comments related to the fact that the shiny finish is difficult to achieve. More than one source agreed that the only way to get the polish to go on evenly and achieve the look is to apply it over a thick topcoat of previously applied clear polish.  It helps to smooth out any ridges or imperfections on the nail so the polish adheres evenly.

Most reviewers said hands-down the best polish to achieve these results was Sally Hansen Color Foil — which is no longer available, but you can find it on Amazon.  So, that was a deadend.

I did round up some other metallic options to consider.  They probably won’t give you the clear, chrome finish I think you’re wanting to achieve, but these are some of the hottest metallic colors recommended by bloggers.

Sally Hansen Game of Chromes from their Miracle Gel line
Two colors from Essie –  No Place Like Chrome and Copper Penny

All that being said, I really think the only way you are going to get the metallic look on your own (I am not a nail technician, but I bet your favorite salon could do it with a powder or gel technique), is to go the Jamberry route.

For those of you out there asking, “what is Jamberry?” — it’s a brand of polish like Essie or OPI, but they specialize in nail wraps, kinda like vinyl lettering.  They have a color appropriately named “Chrome” that would give you the spot-on look you are wanting for $15.

Next, is this new to me OPI Gel Break kit I picked up recently at Ulta.   Like alot of people, when I take a break from having gel nails, my nails are soft, they break and peel easily and for about two months I cannot get my nails to grow.  This 3-step kit is made just for gals like us whose nails need critical care to get them back to being strong and healthy.

The look is sheer, healthy color.  The 3-steps include a serum, protector and top coat with ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (a lubricant), vitamins and bamboo extract to restore your nail’s health.  You can choose the kit with the color you prefer (either properly pink, barely beige, too tan-tilizing) and purchase colors separately if you want to change up your look.

I started using the kit on Wednesday evening.  The packaging says I should see results in just a week.  So far, I like the finish and how it’s wearing on my nails.  I’ll let you know after I’ve given it enough time to see results.

Thank you Jan for your question.  If you are on Instagram, like Jan, I post fun content there you might not see on my blog, so consider yourself an insider and follow the fun @homewithatwist.  Keep the questions coming for Mrs. Twist.  She loves the challenge!

Wednesday’s Weave — My Three Favorite Beauty Products

It’s Wednesday so I’m sharing something fun — my three favorite beauty products — a Dry Shampoo, a lip/cheek stain, and a BB Cream.

My Three Favorite Beauty Products

The Fekkai Blowout Spray is a hair refresher — a nice word for dry shampoo.  For me it also adds some texture to my hair.  The best thing is that it doesn’t smell funny.  I can extend the length between hair washings which is actually better for your hair, especially if it’s color treated.

Lip and Cheek Stain by Josie Maran.  I have been using Argan Oil products for many years, in particular this brand.  They are so nourishing for your skin.  This little tube not only gives me nice rosy cheeks, but it also doubles as a lip stain.  A little goes a long way as it’s highly pigmented.  I highly recommend Josie’s Argan Oil as your moisturizer at night.  It sinks right into my skin and feels luxurious.

Last, is Dr. Jart’s BB Dis-a-Pore Beauty Balm.  I have been using this as my foundation for about three years.  It’s light, easy to apply and evens out my complexion without heaviness.  The benefits of a BB cream is that it moisturizes, protects with the SPF and conceals.  It’s mighty.

So, that’s my Wednesday.  What’s your favorite must-have in your beauty bag?

Pucker Up, Look Smart and Be Bold — Wear Red Lipstick!

I read an article recently from the New York Post “Will Red Lipstick Kill or Kick-Start Your Career?”  Then, I read another one from Allure Magazine.  While neither of these are scientific, it was fun, and reaffirming, reading the interesting opinions on red lipstick.

Aliza Licht, author of “Leave Your Mark”, a career guide, is consistently asked by women if she thinks a red lip sends the right message.  So, Aliza took to social media asking nearly 15,000 online followers to get answers.  Her findings are in the New York Post article, but I thought I would sum up her results:

Q.  Do you think that red lipstick is appropriate to wear in the workplace?

A.  91.2% of women said “Yes, people should look and dress as they see fit.”

Q.  What does red lipstick say about the wearer?

A.  78.8% said  She’s confident!

Q.  Do you think red lipstick is appropriate to wear to an interview?

A.  46.6% said yes (so, I’m guessing 54% say no?).

Q.  Do you think people are judged for wearing red lipstick?

A.  14.7% said negatively

The other article I read was from Allure magazine which listed “Four Scientifically Proven Reasons You Should Wear Red Lipstick All the Time.”

1.  People will think you’re younger.  This is the #1 reason I like to wear red lipstick!  As you age, facial features, like eyebrows and lips, get noticeably paler as you age because your skin gets darker. When I was younger I didn’t like to wear lipstick because I didn’t need to.  But, seriously, ladies in their 50’s need color on their face.  However, you also have to not go wild all over your face with makeup. My favorite way to wear red lips is with a paler eye color.  That creates balance.

2.  One study showed if you are a waitress, you’ll get more tips if you wear red lips.

3.  A 2011 Proctor and Gamble study with Harvard found that red lips could make you look more competent at work.  Men and women were asked to look at 25 photos of women of all races and ages with different degrees of makeup on.  The photos of women with dark eyes and lip makeup were viewed as more competent than one who were bare faced.

4.  You’ll take more selfies.  Studies have shown if you wear red lipstick you are likely to post twice as many selfies in a week as those who go with natural lip color.

Here is my favorite lipstick to wear…Bobbi Brown Harlow Red Art Stick.  It’s a cherry red.

I’ll close with a sweet post I wrote about Earnie and her lip color.  This gentile, southern lady was a firecracker in the lipstick department.  It’s no wonder I have inherited her love of kissable lips!

So, pucker up, look smart and be bold. Life is not a dress rehearsal.

Buzzworthy: Ponds 2-Week Challenge

Ponds.  I used to see it on my Grandmother’s night stand.  I used to watch her smooth it on her face at the end of the day to remove her makeup.  Ponds has a new spokesperson to promote their line of products to make it relevant to women in 2015.  Jordana Brewster.  Aka John Ross’s/Christopher’s/Nicholas’s girlfriend from Dallas.

I read in a magazine that the Ponds towelettes were perfect for traveling so while I was shopping for them recently, I thought I’d get a tub-o-Ponds and try the 2-week Ponds Challenge.  I purchased the Anti-wrinkle formula which comes with a “wrinkle calculator.”  It gives you two applicators — one for when you start using it and the second for when your 2-weeks is up.  You press the powdered applicator along the outside of your eye where your “crows feet” “laugh lines” are.  Then you smile real big like and press the sticky applicator on, pull it off and compare your results with the reference guide.

Good news — I was on the far right with smooth skin as my start.  Bad news, I don’t think I smiled as big as I was supposed to, so I may end of up with more wrinkles after the two weeks is up.

Nevertheless, when I put the cream on at night, I am transported back to my childhood.  The smell is light and very distinctive of the Ponds I remember back in the 60s as I spent time with my Grandmother.  Maybe she’s who inspired me to be interested in taking good care of my skin.

The other coolio thing is that designer Jonathan Adler has designed new packaging perfect to leave out on your vanity.

Check back in two weeks for the low down.  You can go to Ponds and there’s a $1 off coupon and other beauty information to check out.  Give it a try yourself and let me know what you think.
*I am not being compensated for this post.  Just my own buzz.

It’s a 10 Product Review

I follow the The Small Things blog.  Kate always posts fun articles on the latest hair and beauty trends.  One of her suggestions was It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Conditioner.

This nourishing product promises 10 miracles:  Repairs dry damaged hair, adds shine, smoothes and controls frizz, seals and protects hair color, detangles, prevents split ends, stops hair breakage, creates silkiness, enhances natural body, and is a flat iron thermal protector.  It works on all hair types to bring out your hair’s natural luster and manageability while also making hair stronger and healthier with every use. Can be used on wet hair for extra shine or dry hair in place of a styling cream.

I started using it about a month ago.  I have noticed a signficant improvement in the appearance of my hair.  It’s super shiny (like my friend Mrs. Burdette.  She has crazy, shiny hair).  This product has helped me to stabilize my sanity during the snail’s pace attempt to grow out my hair.  My haircut may be scary during its transition but, darn it, my hair is shiny and soft!

Ulta has it for $18.  Don’t forget to use a coupon and you can score it for $15…only a few sprays each time and you can easily get this product to last a while to justify the cost.

Have a fab Friday.

50 Zits

I really don’t have that many, but I’m almost 50 (3 months till lift off) and my pre-menopausal skin is having it’s last hurrah with breakouts.  Like in places I normally don’t get “blemishes”  the sweet Southern term for zits.  So at my last facial, the therapist recommended a product that I think is helping clear up my skin.

I’ve blogged before on the Eminence Skincare products I use.  They are organic and full of good for you ingredients.  I am using the Clear Skin Willow Bark Booster-Serum.  It’s a brown syrup-like serum you put all over your clean skin before moisturizer.  It has willow bark, tea tree oil, walnut leaf, anise, and vitamins A, C and E and Coenzyme Q10.  The first few times I used it my skin tingled, now my skin just drinks it up.

I was having problems with breakouts along the hair line, under my bangs and along the chin.  This serum has cleared all those areas up.  The therapist made sure to tell me to use the product everyday as a preventive measure.  I purchase my products at the Spa and through my dermatologist.  Your face is the first place people see, don’t you want to make sure to take good care of it?

Seven Little Things — #7 Smelling Good

Just in time for Mother’s Day shopping (since we know the best gifts are the ones we pick out) I have two favorite fragrances I like to wear, especially in the summer months when it is so hot and humid.

Isacc Mizrahi’s Fabulous.  I love the offset bottle shape and the cute polka dot top.  The fragrance smells like peonies, lemons and is slightly musky.  Perfect for a date night.  And who doesn’t like to be fabulous!?

My second fave is Philosophy’s Pure Grace.

You truly smell just like you stepped out of the shower with that soap and water clean smell.  This lady like scent is perfect to put on right before bed so the sheets smell nice, or right after a work out.

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!

Smell my Finger

That never ends well, does it?  Well, now that Revlon has come out with perfume scented nail polish every handshake will end with people saying you smell pretty.

Inspired by perfume bottles, Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel comes in many chic shades that once the polish is dry takes on a sweet fragrance.  I tried the Pink Pineapple, a barely there shade of pink.  Sure enough, my digits smelled like pineapple!

I think the little bottles are adorable. Maybe if they are a hit, they could make the tops in clear plastic to look like crystal!

Skincare for the Half-Centenarian

I’m almost 50 (half a century old– yikes).  Last fall I went to the dermatologist and one of my “concerns” was brown spots which just magically appeared especially along the sides of my face.  Although I wear sunscreen on my face everyday, it’s the daily exposure to ultraviolet radiation over our lifetime that causes our skin to age — hence the brown “age” spots.

She recommended the Eminence Organics skincare line.  It’s made with all organic ingredients like fresh fruit pulps, exotic spices and plants, and free from paraben, mineral oil and petroleum.  They have a line for every skin type from acne to wrinkles and everything in between.  It’s super concentrated so a little goes along way.
While you pay more than what you would pay for a grocery store product, it’s not going to break the bank.  I feel at this time in my life, taking good care of skin and paying for high quality ingredients is worth it to me.  She recommended the Bright Skin line.  I have been using the line since August and I still have more than a third left in the containers.  They taught me to use just a little product and rinse with lots of water.

I start with the cleanser in morning and use my Mia Clarisonic — which if you don’t have one, get one.  My skin had lots of little bumps under the surface and I was having breakouts.  Since I started using my Mia, my skin is so much clearer.

My absolute favorite in the line is the Age Correcting Hydrating Mist.  You know how after you wash your face, especially in the winter, it can feel tight or dry.  Well two pumps of this on your face and you instantly feel dewy and hydrated like your skin just took a big gulp of water.

After I wash and mist my face, I apply the moisturizer with SPF of 30.

A few times a week I give myself a spa treatment with the masque or exfoliation treatment. The scrub smells just like a bowl of strawberries.

I think I look pretty good, even if someone did think when I was holding a friend’s baby this week…that is was my grand baby.  This is one hot Grandma!

Nailing it for Spring

A reader asked me to comment on nail colors for spring.  Thanks, Mrs. Hubbard!  I always love reader suggestions.

Dear Mrs. Hubbard,

You can do anything you want with your nails.  From sherbet colors to neon, to ombre touches — everything is in style.

I am in love with Anne Hathaway right now.  She exudes class and style.  Back at the Golden Globes awards I zoomed in on her nail polish:

White nails with butterfly appliques.  She was a Loreal featured star for red carpet makeup, so I have a feeling these appliques are from Loreal.  Chic.

Here she is before Les Mis hair coordinating her dress with her nail polish.

I dig her short hair-do.  I think I am going to get mine cut like hers.  Maybe I’ll have a better chance of winning an Oscar if I do it.  I could be discovered in the Rosemary’s Baby movie re-make.

Ok, moving on…

My new nail polish discovery is from Cover Girl.

Claiming it lasts for one week, I’d have to say it lasted a few days MORE than that!  I usually paint my nails on Saturday night, then have to re-do them by Wednesday.  Not this past week.  It lasted from Saturday to Monday of the following week!  Love it!

I found a coupon in a magazine for $3 off two bottles.  It retails for $5.99 a bottle.  Right now CVS has it buy one, get one 50% off.  You basically get one bottle fah-ree!  Great deal.  54 shades of loveliness. From clear to black with every color in between.  Today, I am sporting a sporty coral color.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Your faithful bee,

HRH
